How To Score Baseball: Runs Created

Have you ever heard of the runs created statistic in baseball? Well, it is really a concept to quantify the offensive player's position batting statistics to a team's total runs scored.

The theory is to assigno positive and negative values for each plate appearance result. For example: Hits, Walks, Steals, Homers, etc are positive values and outs, unsuccessful sacrifices, caught stealing and grounding into a double play are negative.

There are probably over thirty versions of the formula but there is no reason why you have to choose one them. Instead, create your own. Simply assign a value to every possible plate appearance. Tweek the formula until you get it right.

Here is the basic formula to start with:
(Hits + Walks) * (Total Bases)/ (At-Bats/Walks)

(H + BB) * (TB)/ (AB + BB)
